Can we meet you?
My name is Asene Gloria. I
was born on august 10, 1998. My stage name is Ria Sean. I’m a recording artist,
song writer and a dancer, and my aim is to top the music charts both home and
abroad.
Tell us about your background
I am from a family of 10.
Let’s just start from there (smiles); we are seven children; six girls and one
boy, I am the 6th child, and I schooled in Ikorodu, I went to Genius Mind
Nur/Pry School and then went to Ipakodo Secondary School, not in the University
yet.
What kind of song do you do?
I am almost on all sides. I
do reggae, RnB, afro-pop, hip-hop, dancehall, and a little bit of gospel.
Do you play any musical instrument?
For now, no. But I’ve got
plans for that.
Is music a major career for you?
Yes, it is. I’m going into
music full time.
How long have you been into music?
Professionally, it’s been two
years and two months.
Did you learn music?
No, I didn’t. It's something
I got from my father; he was also a lover of music before he died.
Why did you choose music as a career?
Well, music is all I can do
best. It makes me happy, confident and I think, music chose me. So I can’t
ignore it. It’s something that I can use to inspire people.
Have you recorded any song? If yes, how many?
Yes. I’ve recorded over 20
songs.
Have you released an album?
No. I’ve only dropped two
singles.
Do you plan on releasing any album soon?
I’m not planning album right
now. Just want to be dropping singles from next month.
Have you worked with other artists?
Yes
Which artist(s) have you worked with?
I’ve worked with 86onthebeat,
Iphyblack, Blizz, Jayho, Ricky ricky, Jokeyz, etc. they are upcoming artists
like me.
Tell us about your dancing career
Yeah that (smiles) hmmm…
dancing is like a bonus for me. I got it from my mum. I didn’t learn it too,
but it’s not something I am very serious about; although I dance occasionally,
but I’m not taking it as a major career like music.
Do you teach? (dancing or music)
Dancing, yes, but music, no.
How long have you been teaching dancing?
I think 4 years.
Have you taught in any notable place? If yes, where?
Yes. I do choreography for
schools, churches etc. hmmm I stopped teaching dance a long time ago but I
can’t think of any notable place.
Who inspires you?
I get inspired by a lot of
people, a lot of artist that have made it in the industry; both male and female
like Tiwa Savage, 2face Idibia… they are some of the people who have been
topping the charts since day one and they are still killing it right now. I get
inspired by a lot of gospel artists too but above them all, God is my
inspiration, I believe, and my mum, also.
Her support has been amazing,
I mean, it’s hard to get that kind of support from parents, especially when
it's something like music, it's rare.
Why did you say it's rare?
Because I know a lot of
people who want to do music too but parents' disapproval is what’s holding them
back.
Have you been into any competition? How many and how
many have you won?
None musically, but I’ve been
into some dancing competitions. Although, I’ve not been to any major
competition except for a street dance competition, and it’s the only
competition I won.
Have you performed in public (either dancing or
singing)?
Yes
How many public performances have you had?
I would say 15 but I am very
sure it’s more than that. Let’s just say over 15.
Can you tell us your top five public music
performances?
Ok, number one would be when
I performed at Festac in a club called RUMOURS, I performed alongside Skiibii;
that was my second time performing publicly.
My number two was at an open
mic and I was the only female artist who was a singer, the rest were rappers
(smiles).
Number three, we had a party
in my church and I was asked to perform and I did and it was great because even
though nobody knew the song, they still showed me so much love.
Number four would be when I
performed at a Valentine Street Jam and also, I was the only female singer and
my number five was when I performed at a street carnival. I was told about 15
minutes before the show started and even though I didn’t prepare very well, in
fact, I didn’t even dress well, I wore (laughs) slippers but it was still great
as nobody knew the song but still sang along, I felt like a superstar that day
(laughs). So, those are my top 5 public music performances.
Can you also give us your top five public performances
(dance)?
Number one would be when I
was still in high school, I went with some other students to represent my
school for the governor’s education awards in 2014.
Number two was at a dinner
appreciation party in my church (smiles).
Number three was also in my
church.
Number four would be when I
danced at a street dance competition which I won and number five was at a
birthday party, that was the first time I danced publicly.
So do you write music for people or just for yourself?
Just for myself.
Which famous artist(s) do you admire and why do you
admire them?
I admire and listen to a lot
of artists as long as you've got good music, I’m ok but then, if I’m to mention
names I would say Tiwa, 2baba, Davido, Simi, Falz, Jessie J, Brandy, Dr Sid,
Waje, P Square, Rihanna, Nathaniel Bassey, to name a few.
What is / are your favorite quote(s)?
Hmmm (smiles) I don’t think
I’ve got any.
So, what's your advice for upcoming artists like you?
Ok (smiles). Dear upcoming
artist, like me, here is the format. More hard work, less distractions, stay
away from drugs, believe in God, serve him like never before, now that you have
the time, follow your dreams till you achieve it. Don’t let anybody scare you
with their stories, all you need to do is believe in yourself and most
importantly, always be humble no matter who or where you are today or in
future, execute pride.
