THE WITNESS (A Novel) Episode 2

She hurried along the already closed door, hoping the party had not started as the boys do not like seeing girls at their all boys’ party, except for call girls that are specially brought for the party. But as she moved closer to the door, she heard faint sounds, meaning the party is about to start.

I just have to hurry up and get my dress at the laundry room before it’s too late. Things have been so jam-packed today…I have to move fast and maybe get a glass of wine before the party finally starts. She thought to herself. Although she did not come back for the cloth in the laundry room behind the bar but for the purse which holds her ATM card and ID cards that she forgot in one of her pockets. It’s Friday and I won’t be able to block the ATM card or report if lost until Monday! She thought angrily.

Instead of going to the laundry room for her purse first, she went to the bar to get some drink because the queue waiting to get to the laundry is long and the bar attendant on duty,  John, is a friend of hers, so they chatted a little…

“Why are you here by this time?” John asked.

“Oh…I just forgot my purse in my dress pocket and it houses my ATM card and ID cards and since it’s not my turn yet, I am here for a drink”

“Oh here, have a drink” he gave her a glass of wine “you have to hurry up as we will soon have influx of customers”.

“Don’t worry” she said “I won’t delay you”.

She walked to her stand at the laundry, picked up the dress with the purse and moved to the only table and chair behind a large desk that separated the bar from the walk way. She sat at the edge of the chair behind the table and tried to pull the purse out of the dress pocket, but as she was about to bring it out, the purse fell down and she bent down to pick it up. When she held the purse, before she could raise her body to take her position on the chair she was sitting on, she sensed an odd silence and when she looked up, she froze. There were six men at the bar wearing expensive suits and holding guns. Although they could not see her behind the table but she could see them clearly. Not knowing what to do, she quickly removed all the little money and all her belongings from her purse and shoved them inside the pocket of the dress she was wearing; she picked up the purse and carefully crawled under the table.

From under the table, there is a hole through which she can see everything happening at the bar without anybody noticing her. She could also see the faces of the men clearly.

Having asked everybody to kneel down, pointing guns at them, one of the men said, “Gentlemen, there is no need for panic, as long as you do what I say, no one will get hurt”. Facing a man holding a large laundry bag who was obviously sweating and probably peeing in his pant and standing directly in front of the table where she was hiding, he continued…“we happen to hear from a solid source that you Mr. man are here to keep a large amount of money since the bank has closed and I’m sure the big bag beside you contains the money and my boys and I are here to pick the bag.

I can see most of you are not comfortable and am sorry about that. Henry?” he called one of his men. “Close all windows and doors securely and quickly. Jude”, he called another man “take the bag and join Hillary and pack all the money from the safe at the bar”.

While all this was happening, she was shaking and crying, with her hands covering her mouth to keep her from making a sound. One of the men was moving to and fro where she was hiding for minutes before finally joining the others.

“Jeff, open the back door” the leader instructed.

“Yes sir!” Jeff said and seconds later, he said “everything is ready sir”.

The six men brought out their guns and the leader said “then I guess it's time to leave”

“What are you doing?” one of the captives asked, almost shouting”.

“Co-operate now, I told you no one would get hurt…” before he finished his statement, one of his men shot a man.

“But you promised…” the captive continued but before he could finish his speech, the leader shot him.

“I lied” the gang leader said.

Then he put his gun back to his pocket…but before he turned to leave, he looked directly at the desk hole and she looked directly at him also, then he dipped his hand into his pocket and brought out his gun…
