Samson
stood by the door, looking at Sylvia like someone watching a suspense film on
Africa Magic; not knowing what to do, he walked into the room and sat by the
bed while Sylvia continued to pack her belongings from the wardrobe.
“Sylvia,
you are packing because I asked you to marry me? Am I not good enough for you
as I am? I thought you said you love me?”
“Love
kwa! Why now Sam, why now that you don’t have money again? So you want to tie
me down to this your life of poverty with marriage when there are better and
rich guys out there?”
“But
I love you...and you told me you love me too, last time we were on vacation,
and…”

“That
was three months ago” Sylvia interrupted “And as at then, you could still
afford a vacation! Now, you can’t even afford your house rent!” Picking up her
bag, she walked up to him, pecked him on both cheeks “I love you Sam, but I can’t
live in poverty. I’m going back to my parents in the States. Goodluck in
finding a wife who can live with you in poverty”. With that, she left the room,
without bothering to close the door.
Pacing
to and fro the edges of the bed, Sam placed his head on his palm and he was
about to sit back on the bed when his sister, Sabrina walked in.
“I
told you she’s a gold digger Sam, but you wouldn’t believe me. Just look out
the window, she’s going with your best friend Obinna!”
Surprised
and angry at the same time, Sam jumped out of the bed “What?...Obinna? I’ll
kill that bastard!” He was about rushing out of the room when his mother walked
in. “Leave the road mama, I need to teach those fools a lesson!”
“What
for?” His sister replied from behind. Thank God you didn’t tell her about your
wealth. Thank God she didn’t even realise you are the owner of this house!...”
“I’ve
told you before, that girl is bad news” his mother chipped in “why you didn’t
listen to us, I don’t know. Anyway, you have a call from the office...it’s the
Chief”.
“What
does he want? Last time I checked, I’m on vacation which won't end until three
months time.”
“You
better go talk to him, you know how nasty your father gets when you keep him
waiting”.
As
he was leaving the room, he heard his mother asking his sister “is it true? Is
that leach gone for good?”
“I
hope so mama...”
On
getting to the parlour, he picked up the phone “hello dad, how…”
“Get
to my office within the next hour” his father interrupted
“Yes
sir. But…” before he could continue, his father hung up.

Frustrated
at his mother who was giggling like a teenager, he asked “And what were you
both doing at my office?”
“Nothing…”
she replied innocently “just taking a walk like the old days”
“Oh
mom! Will you and dad stop it already? The two of you just walk the street like
teenagers”
“And
what’s bad with us feeling young always? Enough of talks about your dad and I
son. Who was that lady from last night”
“She’s
not just any lady mom. She’s my boss. And for your information mom, you might
as well tell that teenage husband of yours that I am travelling out of town
tomorrow. There’s been an incident at a location I don’t know yet, a robbery,
and everyone was killed. I have to go and investigate; although according to
the information we got, it will take us just two days to finish things up since
there is nothing left to do than to clean up the mess and take the bodies to
the morgue”.
“You
might as well check out some of the young ladies they have there”
“Are
you so tired of me that you already want me out of the house mom? Will you sell
me over to any female?”
“As
long as you love each other son”
Raising
his eyebrow jokingly, “Yes mom. Maybe I’ll get lucky at wherever it is
that I’m going to, since all the ladies in here thinks I’m too old for
marriage”
“Stop
right there young man. You are only 29 and any lady would be lucky to have you.
Only if you ask them!”
“Alright
mom. I need to continue with my packing…unless you want me to miss the meeting
i have with the Chief”.
“Alright,
I'll leave you to pack”

When
Samson got to the office, he met another man and they greeted each other. “Sit
down Samson” his father said. “This is Inspector Kunle Daniels, he has been
here for some time now, now, you two are going to be working together. Sorry
your vacation has ended as at now because you have an assignment which you two
will be working on.
“There’s
been a robbery at The City’s Laundry In Badagry and about 11 people were
killed. So, your job now is to go there and check whether you can find out
anything. Your assignment starts now.” Standing up, the two inspectors also
stood up, and saluted in unison “Yes Sir.”

When
the two inspectors got to the area of the robbery, they went straight to the
Laundry for further investigation, since the bodies were left for them to come
and check out. When they saw the bodies, Samson cried out “Oh God!” and ran out
to throw up. They then called for an ambulance to take the corpse to the
mortuary.
When
the corpses has been removed, the inspectors checked everything in the bar and
laundry. They checked the register to know the names of the people that were
either at the bar or at the laundry at the time of the incident. While
checking, they realised that there had been a total of 17 people: fourteen men
and three women. They were about to leave the building when Inspector Kunle saw
something under a desk, when he looked closer, he realised it was a female’s
purse. As he bent down to pick up the purse, he saw a hole under the desk,
then, he realised that while bending down, anyone who looks closer, could see
everything going on in the area and no one will notice.
He
got up and called Inspector Samson, he showed him the purse and what he
discovered under the desk. When Samson saw it, he sighed and said, “definitely,
we have a witness and it’s a female.”
“I
agree with you, we have a female witness. But who among the females? We have
three names on this list, who among them do you think the witness is?
With
the hope that there is a female witness, they left the building for the police
station in the area to explain everything they saw and they talked to the
police Chief and Inspector assigned to show them everywhere they need to go to
in the town.
Inspector
Kunle suggested that since it’s getting dark, they should rest for the day.
With that, they went to get a place to stay for rest of the day.
