Recently
I got an invitation from one of my alma maters to come as a guest for their
talk show "The Interview". Though, I've not been able to honour that
invitation due to my busy schedule. But I definitely will, whenever I'm free.

I
remember I used to be the school's head boy back then, succeeding Collins
Callito. In my class, there were always three contenders for the first
position; Rosemary, Uche and I. But Rosemary the only female contender was
seemingly dominating the class more often than the rest of us combined. Ending
in the third place used to feel like hell had been let loosed. But you needed
to see the greater hells when I got into JSS1 in a Government Secondary School.
You remember the adage of the one-eyed man being the king of the blind? That was
exactly my story in primary school.
Reminiscing
these past events recently, I vividly recalled one unusual conversation I had
with Uche my closest friend then in Primary Five. At the peak of our
gullibility and shallow-mindedness, Uche started out one morning "Victor,
when we grow up, let's make our own country outside Nigeria. But it will be
small, so that we can manage it". "That's true, I've been thinking of
that too. We'll name it River Cross, because we'll cross lots of rivers and mountains
to get a free land. We'll take only our family members and we'll form our own
language, currency and flag...." I responded with enthusiasm while Uche
was busy itemizing my ideas like UN Secretary General. "Okay, I'll be the
president and you'll be the Vice" he concluded "That's okay by
me" I added and the conversation went on and on.... Before the end of that
day at school, "River Cross" had already had its flag, coat of arm
and a concept for its own TV Station (Probably my first encounter with media
conceptualization). Although the dream died as time passed, and memories of
that weird conversation faded fast, three things remained important; we knew
there was no crime in aiming high in life, we knew there were purposes for our
existence and we were battle ready to dare the rare challenge. Crazy!

The
problem we have today is that we find going just one centimetre past our
parent’s mileage as a huge achievement. We feel we have arrived at the apex
when we out-perform the records of our peers and colleagues. No! Those are not
the parameters for success. Success in itself is calculated by what you have
done compared to what you should and could have done. The popular phrase in
Western Nigeria "Isale oro legbin" (The bottom of riches is blood)
has so held us hostage that we have put ourselves on self-destruct, more like a
self-sabotage. Lemme tell you, Otedola and Dangote don't have two heads, but
what they have in those heads are what make them totally different from you. If
what you still have in your head is "Isale oro legbin", sorry ooo you
have not even started crying over recession, depression is around the corner.

You
see, in this life God has blessed us all with blank cheques and there is
absolutely no crime in filling in as much as you want in it. Unfortunately, as
we grow older and face challenges, we begin to set limits for ourselves and
build imaginary obstructions in our heads. You need to know these if you don't:
You are what you think you are, you can never go beyond the limits you have
imaginarily built in your head, you can never be a millionaire when you have
not started thinking like one and still go about fighting over every petty
thing. In fact, we all need to go back to our childhood stage when we believed
there was absolutely nothing that could stop us from achieving our set goals.
In actual sense, nothing can stop you except you.
No
time is too late for you start. If you think all hope is lost because you are
probably still struggling with Jamb and your peers recently flooded your
timeline with Unilag graduation gown pictures, my brother come and receive
sense. When did you start believing the race is for the swiftest? Where was
your MSc-holding father when an O' level holder became president? eh? Answer
me. How old was Rockefeller (One of America's all time richest men) when he
discovered himself? eh? If your definition of success is still Nigeria's
6-3-3-4 education system, sorry sir, you have been a victim of deceit.
Begin
to set higher goals, begin to raise your desires. Recently I learnt a better way
of doing this. Write down your goals like you would a storybook. "And
there I stood when the spotlight came on, and then FIFA President came over to
shake hands with me, and presented me with the PUSKAS award"........
Something more like that. Study your goals more often, laugh at your
gullibility, and then work hard at achieving it. Take away the limitations,
barriers and obstructions from your head, tell yourself you can do it and
ultimately, keep on keeping the faith.

Remember,
for every time you fail to raise your desires, you become a problem to a
thousand people around you and every time you raise your desires and fly high
you become a solution to a thousand problems around you.
My
desire is to make twenty millionaires before I leave here.
What
is yours?
